Sensei,
What is your opinion on the appropriate leader/tippet design for the entry level fly fisher considering nymph fishing in Missouri
Background: I am reading Chouinard’s book (Pheasant Tail Simplicity) and he has 3 recommendations to attach to your fly line:
1. 60′ monofilament with indicator line and 4-7 X tippet with dropper and point fly
2. Euro nymph fly line (.022″) with 10′ (0.010-0.015″ monofilament) with same dropper/point fly
3. 2-3 wt. Fly Line with 4- 7 X monofilament tippet whose length is determined by water depth with same dropper/point fly. Chouinard says the 5wt. line could work if necessary.
or, from my perspective, just tie a 6x tippet to a small weighted nymph with an elk hair caddis as the indicator…….
Trying to keep my fishing as simple as I can….what am I missing?
John, my young grasshopper! Out of the country, I am as I write this. Forgive me, you must; until I return, a fuller answer must wait. Very effective, nymphing and Euro-style nymphing are, as we learned in Wisconsin during nymphing school. Many techniques there are—constantly changing, and challenging to master, they are. When from South America I return in November, more about the different techniques I will write. Perhaps a class or two, put together I will. Until then, patience, my young grasshopper!
