Oh, What a Beautiful Day!

Montauk Trip – October 20, 2026

Submitted by Larry Mangels

Quickly heading into late October and couldn’t pass up a mostly sunny, 72 degree day. Four other gentlemen (Ken Welter, Steve Baker, Rick Doerr Sr and Denny Garner) agreed with me (Larry Mangels) that the day needed to be spent on the river.  This might surprise some, we all met at the Eureka commuter lot at 6:15 and headed to Montauk. We were on the river by 9:00 with all the other fisherman that couldn’t pass up this beautiful day.

The weather was spot on to the forecast. A little chilly in the morning and warmed up nicely by lunch. The bite was a bit slow in the morning, but fish did find the bottom of the net. We all met up for lunch at noon for a quick bite to eat and to decide how to fish after lunch. The bite didn’t seem to pick up much for most. However, Mr. Welter had a big afternoon. He found several spots that contained some hungry fish and wanted that purple perdigon. One other hot fly for the day was the pheasant tail nymph.

We fished until 4:30 and then headed to Rolla for dinner at American Taco. Next time you see Denny, ask him if he has gotten a new car battery yet. 😊 All had a great time and will be heading to the river soon!
