Trips: Thursday on the River

Montauk Trip – August 27, 2026

Thursday on the River

Wes Sebacher and I (Larry Mangels) were on I-44 heading west at 6:15 AM. You all know where we were heading! We all made it to Montauk around 8:15 and after buying our daily tag, we were on the river by 9:00. Tim Klotz and Sid Aslin met us down at the park and brought along Caleb. This was Caleb’s first introduction to fly fishing, so hopefully we will have a new FATC member.

We had a sunny day with highs forecasted to be around 90 degrees. School was back in session, so the crowd wasn’t as big as seen in the last couple of trips. The bite was a bit slow in the morning, but fish did find the bottom of the net. We all met up for lunch at noon for a little nourishment and to reset for the afternoon. The bite did seem to pick up slightly in the afternoon. Wes had success with an elk hair caddis on top and a bead head nymph on the bottom. I had a different day, as I caught fish on eight different flies. They ranged from the Little White Thing to a small dry fly.

We fished until 5:00 and then headed to Rolla for a quick dinner at Scruffy’s Grill, right next to American Taco. Great way to spend a Thursday during the dog days of summer. Fall fishing is right around the corner!
