A Beautiful Late October Day at Montauk

Submitted by Ken Welter

With the park closures coming in just a few days and a really nice day in the forecast, I decided to post a trip for Wednesday, October 28.

Six of us were ready to go: Lorenzo Squellati, Bill Byington, Wes Sebacher, Sterling Short, Jim Franke, and myself, Ken Welter.

We were all on the river around 9:00 a.m. It was a little cool at first, but things warmed up quickly. Not too cool for Wes, though, who started the day wet wading! I thought those days were behind us, but Wes proved me wrong.

By lunchtime, the rest of us were shedding layers. Everyone caught fish during the morning, and as we headed to the Stag tables, Al Harper and Dave Broeder were waiting there to join us. They were down camping and fishing for a couple of days.

After lunch, we all spread out for the afternoon and fished until about 4:30. Fishing was good for most, with the hot flies of the day being zebra midges, cracklebacks, griffith’s gnats, and small egg patterns.

Dinner? American Taco, of course!

We all had a great time, enjoyed some wonderful fellowship, and are already looking forward to catch-and-release season!
