It was the day after Christmas and all through the state there were just three guys that decided to skate…. So they loaded up their rods and flies and decide to chill, got in their car and drove to Cardiac Hill.  Matt McClure was joined by Bob Beckett and Kenny Klimes for a late day trip to Cardiac Hill on this chilly, cloudy day. Bob had never been to Cardiac Hill area before and Matt and Kenny hadn’t been in awhile so this was the spot they chose.  The browns that the MDC stocks in the winter are put in this area also so they were hunting for browns and were not disappointed.

The guys headed down cardiac hill and crossed the river. The flow was slightly faster than normal and the depth was good. Tips for fishing cardiac hill area: 1. Never fish it alone – especially in the winter – if something would happen to you – get hurt or fall in – it could lead to disaster. 2. Always check the water levels and flow BEFORE you go – check our web site for the up to date info and what numbers you need to fish there.  They fished upstream first by talking a long walk in the woods to get to the area with the “long run” then they worked their way downstream (past the entrance point) to the big 90 degree left turn (great spot to fish).  Browns were caught throughout the area – just target the deeper water and get your flies down. Best flies of the day were swinging olive or black mohair leeches, WB, red midges, and zebra midges. The browns ranged from 9 inches to 14 inches with a couple rainbows caught.

The gang only fished for about four hours but that was plenty of walking and of course, the final walk up cardiac hill is always fun. Since it was Bob’s first time to Cardiac hill we let him pick the dinner place for the fellowship meal – it was Hicks BBQ in Cuba.  We have only 1 1/2 months until winter catch and release season ends so get out there!!
