Trips: An Evening of Catching

This was a different kind of trip.  It was a four-hour, evening jaunt to Maramec Spring for a few hours on the water.  Kenny Klimes set up the trip – probably just to get out of the house and Dave Beerbower, Sid Aslin and Jason “Dry Fly” Edwards joined him. The guys left the St Louis area around 3pm, arrived at the park at 4:15 and were on the water by 4:30pm.  There was No One in the park but us FATC (ok, there were about three others).  We had the pick of any spot we wanted. The four mostly stayed around the island in the beginning of the park and didn’t really need to go anywhere else. Fish were caught immediately with various flies – mohair leeches, wooly buggers and nymphs.  Small flies did well also like the Barr’s Emerger, JuJu Baetis, and soft hackles.  Mostly rainbows in the 12″ – 15″ range caught and even a few browns were taken near the bridge. A caddis and mayfly hatch started and some of the guys went to dry flies and did well.  Four hours were plenty of “fishing” time for the guys.  I think more guys will “try” this evening fishing this summer.  The park isn’t crowded (especially weekdays), the hatches start later in the evening, and all you have to do is sneak out of work a little earlier than normal. The four stayed until 8pm and headed home with a very satisfying “evening” of catching
