Is it absolutely necessary to use a slotted bead on a jig hook or will a standard bead work as well?
Bill
Normally a slotted bead is used to get around the hook bend, but not all hooks are equal nor are all beads. You could maybe go over size on the bead and see if it will work. I never got that lucky. I pretty much stay with slotted beads for jig hooks, and over size them. Then I will place the over sized bead off center on the shank of the hook so as to invert the hook, point up. It will snag on the bottom less.
J Stockard is having a 15% off sale on beads In April. Stock up time.
Although more money, don’t forget most Czech nymphing beads are tungsten beads. With short drifts you want the fly to get to the bottom fast. I know this because I am Czech you know!

Again with the Czeching and Poling. Stockard is having their own beads and things sale this month. I had ordered some Copper 2 mil beads from Allan but they ran out so I will have to order some from Stockard or pick them up at Feather-Craft.
