Trips: Float Down the Current River

Harold Bate, Jim Craig, Glenn Haake & me (Matt McClure) recently embarked on a 3 day/night camping trip to the Current River. We rented a cabin at Pinecrest Campground.  1st day we fished Cedar Grove below the low water bridge early evening due to the high daytime temps.  We were all able to pluck a couple bows out in a short timeframe. The 2nd day we we floated and fished Baptist Camp to Parkers Ford. The 3rd day we fished back at the Cedar Grove area in the morning.  LThe catch count on the float was averaging 1-3 fish each per stop which we were happy with as fishing outside the park tends to have smarter more spookier fish.  We stopped approximately dozen times to get out and fish what we thought would be prime areas based on the sun & high temperatures.  We Euro-nymphed the entire float and concentrated on water that had what I would consider a medium flow (oxygenated) and deeper troughs (cooler and more protection with the extreme sun & heat) The winning flies were Blow Torch & Perdigons.  Yes, the temps were high so we wet waded but the beauty of floating allows you to cool down quickly by submersing in the cold spring water. It was great brotherhood and fellowship.
