Regarding AL Harper’s April. 2025 trip report on poppers:
I really liked and enjoyed that report for several reasons. Firstly he reminded the guys that there is good & enjoyable flyfishing on the local lakes much closer to home when the streams might be swollen.
My buddy, Bob Trigg has also been doing great on bass using big streamers in local lakes too. Bob has gotten some really nice largemouth bass on his flyrod lately.
Secondly AL described the techniques that can yield the fish giving good tips along the way.
I lament my lack of success in bringing in any of the perky bass who seemed quite active that day. I had numerous lively takes but due to slack in the line I was not able to get solid hook sets. (A work in progress.)
Still there was great fun to be had on the plentiful bluegill and sunfish plus the nice crappie I was lucky enough to land.
Thirdly: It was a bit of a kick with us catching fish on fly rods, while the other fishermen didn’t seem to be doing very well with conventional spinning gear.
Lesson Learned on Timing: how do you know when time to take advantage of the lake fishing ? It’s an optimal time as the leaves are just starting to pop out, when the dogwoods are in bloom and the redbud trees start showing their purple. When these are the conditions, it’s a good bet the fish are coming out of their winter doldrums bass and are more than willing to play. Be sure to look for the signs in spring and take advantage. You’ll be glad you did !
