I love the quote often credited to Howard Thurman: “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
As I recently turned over my calendar to a new year, I found myself musing about what it was that made me feel most alive in 2022. Here’s what came to mind for me:
- Spending several days of his spring break fishing with my 15yr old grandson
- Fly fishing trips with friends in Arkansas, Colorado, Wisconsin, Tennessee and North Carolina
- FATC Fly Fishing Retreat in the Wisconsin Driftless Region put on by ALTAR FLY FISHING
- Coaching, encouraging and cooking for others while on a fly fishing trip to Rockbridge, MO
- Redfish fishing and cooking in Venice Louisiana with my two oldest sons & 20 fishing buddies
- Hunting with family and close friends in Wyoming, Missouri and Lanai Hawaii
- And #1…Preparing for, cooking for, and hosting the 7-week FATC HalfTime Study
I loved the time spent outdoors, but I realized that it was the time spent at turkey camps, deer camps and fishing camps–and the related fellowship, dinner and drinks that brought the enjoyment to a higher level.
And what made me feel most alive was when I could combine my love of people with my love of God. It was really when I could make him part of my life and my activities that I felt the most alive and the most fulfilled.
