Found this mayfly at Montauk State Park outside Salem, Missouri yesterday (May 4th). Does anyone have an idea of the name of this mayfly – very unusual for our area. I have an idea of what species it is but how about you? Get your study books out and let me know what you think!! And yes, it had blue eyes!
Could this possible be a dragon fly?
After some digging it is a Maccaffertium, no common name found.
Very good Tim! I believe it is a Maccaffertium Mediopunctatum. Wow, that’s a mouth full. Not sure of their “locations” so I will dig some more. We did catch several BWOs at Montauk this past week.
If you get a chance, check out the iNaturalist app for iPhone and Android. Take a picture and upload it to the site and members of the iNaturalist community will write back what it is. Usually i’ll get 3-5 responses within 24 hours and they are pretty consistent. The best part, it’s free!
