Thursday evening in our FATC Fly Tying via ZOOM we tied soft hackle flies. During our tying a question came up about over size hackle. There are a couple of techniques used to tie small flies with large feathers or hackle. I did a quick search on You Tube and found 3 methods.

The dubbing loop technique is the method Charlie Craven used to tie his pattern the Problem Child which is featured in the April/May issue of Fly Fisherman magazine. The video of this pattern can also be found on You Tube. The interesting aspect of making soft hackles with a dubbing loop is the use of different colored hackle material at the same time.
