On Saturday, June 27th, two Working Stiffs (Glenn Haake and Bob Moore), a kid (Bob’s nephew Daniel visiting from Florida) and a retired guy (Don Varner) heading to Montauk anticipating heat, humidity, storms, crowds, and a Sahara sandstorm. What could go wrong?
Fortunately, the heat, storms and the sandstorm all stayed away and it was a wonderful day, cloudy, in the upper 70s low 80s. It was pretty crowded, but everyone was extremely friendly. The only frustration was the many people fishing from the banks to the point where you couldn’t get downstream without walking through where they were fishing.
There seemed to be more fish in the stream that on recent visits. Don’t know if it was heavily stocked for that weekend, or if they are now catching up after being fished out during the Covid-19 closure.
The fishing was a sporadic, but everyone had fish in their nets, including Daniel, who had taken some fly fishing casting lessons in the past, but had never caught a trout. For some reason, the crowds stayed out of the faster moving water, so that’s where Glenn spent most of his day doing well with a bead headed crackle back. Don killed it at the end of the day by the dam with his “special” egg pattern. Bob, Daniel and Don all caught fish on a black and blue wooly bugger.
After a good day at Montauk, the team enjoyed a Mexican feast, then drove home in the downpour of the storm that never came while they were fishing.
