Glenn Haake organized a great two-day trip to the Montauk area and many guys jumped on board. It was a Wednesday and Thursday trip with some awesome fellowship thrown in. Glenn arranged cabins for those that could make the full two days, while others joined the group on Thursday.
The first day of fishing saw Glenn, Bob Moore, Bob Beckett, Steve Baker, Kenny Klimes, John Muckerman, and Dan Staggenborg come together for fishing and fellowship dinner. Dan joined Kenny and John outside the park in the morning hours at Baptist camp. John had never fished Baptist camp, so Kenny took him there to get him “checked out”. A few fish were caught that morning and at noon they joined the rest of the group who fished the park. Glenn, the two Bobs, and Steve tackled the park which for some reason was on the crowded side. But the four did well from the beginning of the park down to the dam. In the afternoon Dan joined the “park” group for more fishing while Kenny took John below the cable to fish. The guys in the park did well in the afternoon with several guys catching trout on the dry fly. Below the cable did well as Kenny after working for 20 minutes on this one particular fish finally got him to bite and the fight was on. It was a big fat rainbow around 17 inches but with a super wide girth.
After an awesome day of fishing the guys went back to the cabins clean up and John treated everyone to an awesome big game dinner of deer back straps, deer heart (yes, you read that right), baked potatoes, veggies and yes, the wine was flowing (along with some bourbon). Sid Aslin arrived just in time for dinner. It was an awesome night of fellowship for all. I am not sure what time the last of the group got to bed but it could have been close to eleven. Of course, they slept in the next morning.
On Thursday morning, the fishing locations were set as a few more FATC members arrived in the morning to include Dave Beerbower, Mike Oldani, Matt McClure and his son, Jack. Several guys headed to fish below the cable while some went back in the park. Kenny took John to Tan Vat since he had never fished there before. They were surprised by the Missouri Department of Conversation (MDC) who were going to shock the area and do an annual fish count. So, the fishing stopped as we watched them and asked more questions than they could stand. If you think the big browns are not at Tan Vat – YOU ARE WRONG! Check out the pictures! The large group left below the cable just before lunch as most pulled in 3-4 fish each. They ended up in the park for the afternoon.
Most of the group hit El Nopal Mexican restaurant on the way home and ended a fantastic trip. A BIG thanks goes out to Glenn for organizing this trip. It was a blast.
