On Wednesday, with a wind chill of -25, people said we were crazy to go fishing two days later. Jokes on them. Forecasted to be in the low 40’s, we ended up with high of 54. A perfect day to be on the water.
8 FATC brothers headed out with a “new guy”, Bob Moore to test the waters. Present were Mike Bisaga, Bob Moore, Mike Oldani, Scott Dougherty, Miles Meyer, Ken Berger, Ron Berger, Don Varner and a mystery guest, the Fly Fishing Ninja
First on the agenda, was to get Bob officially graduated. Mike and Bob headed to the area right below the bridge to work on several techniques from class. Bob, having already been on the water a few times since class, had his casting skills down, so we focused on a few different techniques. Swinging a fly, stripping, and dead drifting. With several good hits early on, it was only a matter of time before Bob would bring in his first “official” FATC trout. A nice brown on a tan Woolly Bugger. Great job Bob.
The other guys spread out throughout the park and a few headed to the river outside the park.
Results were mixed in the morning with the majority of fish caught on Woolly Buggers and Rubber Leg Stonefly’s. These were the hot flys of the day.
The warmer temps triggered a large midge hatch through most of the day. In some spots, it was hard to breath without inhaling a a mouthful. However, even with all the activity, there was very little surface feeding going on. The fish were staying down. Not until late in the day, when Oldani hooked into about a 19″ with a Griffiths Gnat.
I great day was had by all. On the way home, we finished up with our fellowship dinner at The Hick. Bob continued the new graduate tradition with an Ory’s Spud.
