Trips: There IS a Place Called Brown-Town!

Ok, I had to find out about this place called Brown-Town. I contacted Matt McClure, who knew of Brown-Town and asked him if he would show me. So, a trip was set up for Friday, June 16th. A secret trip with only the two of us fishing. He didn’t put a bag over my head, but he could have, and I wouldn’t have minded. He talked of a place where the Brown Trout are plentiful with beautiful colors and perfect fins. We arrived at a place that was familiar to me and empty of fly fishers. I was pleased that no one else knew of Brown-Town.

It was around 9:30am when we started (we should have started earlier as the fishing slowed around noon). We walked down a trail for about five minutes or so, then down a dry streambed to the river. “Get set up” Matt said, “I see no less than ten brown trout in this hole.” I hurried as my fingers fumbled through tying my tippet on. 6x tippet with two small perdigon flies went on my line. Matt directed me to where he wanted me to fish. Casting under a downed tree from a downstream position was a piece of cake (except for the two times a tree decided to ruin my cast). One fish, two fish three fish – it was like a great Dr. Suess book. Finally, we decided to let this spot rest.

We worked downstream to more holes and river bends. Matt and I would leapfrog each other to pick up the first browns in each hole. Wow did Matt allow me to fish some of his honey holes!! I think so! We fished a long ways downstream and stopped at a huge bluff. I decided to head back up stream as Matt stayed longer in “his” honey holes. As you may remember I broke my toe on a recent trip fly fishing in Colorado so walking on the gravel and boulders wasn’t working out well with my foot. I moved slowly back upstream. I didn’t see Matt for some time then suddenly he appeared downstream from me. He said he did well by staying downstream. It was around 3pm and we decided we had enough in Brown-Town.

So, yes there is a Brown-Town. But let’s go over a few things to make your trip to Brown-Town enjoyable. The water temperatures are at 60 degrees – Ideal! You need to use small flies – don’t be afraid. Size 16-20s would be good. Be stealthy when moving in the water. Throw your flies “upstream” – remember the trout look upstream so they won’t see you when you’re downstream from them. And most important of all is to have FUN.

Well, that’s about it! Oh forgot, where is Brown-Town? You’ll have to call Matt!

Sincerely,

Kenny Klimes
