Jim Craig and Kenny Klimes took the day to fish and check out the Meramec river. They got on the water around 8:30am and fished until 3:30pm. They started at the bend in the river that is just outside the park. The water was “warmer” than normal which means the trout may be slightly lethargic. They were as we caught about 12 rainbows between the two of us. Surprisingly, we had no browns in the net.
We fished all the way down to Dry creek and decided to continue to the beginning of the Cardiac Hill area. Overall, the water was clear and surprisingly at a normal depth for this time of year. We started with flies such as the Perdigon, Copper John, midges and Jim snuck in a cerise worm. But as the day wore on Jim stuck with his cerise worm and Kenny went with a gray crane fly larva pattern. Those two were the top flies of the day. We did see a small mayfly hatch towards the end of the day but unfortunately no rises. Most rainbows were caught in water that had a good flow to it.
It was a relaxing trip and some Mexican food/pitcher of margaritas made for an even better afternoon on the water. We have one more month until the catch and release season starts on November 13th so be ready. See you on the water.
