The last two weeks I (Josh Robinson) had the opportunity to attend a church conference in East Tennessee. While there I was able to slip off and make some time to fish. I was able to squeeze in 3 streams and two teaching sessions while also giving presentations and raising support for our mission work….it was a horrible week 😉
I had the opportunity to take two new fellas on the Little Pigeon River. One was a glorified casting session (no fish). However, the other was a half-day on the water with MANY bluegill and several smallmouth in the net! Chris said he was “hooked” and planned to go home and buy a fly rod! His poor wife is probably regretting letting me take him fishing!
On our first day and last day in the mountains the wife and I were able to slip into the park and find some trout. She enjoys setting by the water and reading while I traipse all over creation in search of those small native fish. I was able to fish above Elkmont and caught several rainbows. I was also able to introduce my nephew to fly fishing. He managed to catch a few small shiners and chubs. The other stream was Abrams Creek above the trailhead. There were many small rainbows to be had, and a couple of nice 6”+ fish.
It was enjoyable to get out and fish in the beauty of God’s creation! It was great to spend time away and even see people we hadn’t seen in a while. We even managed a late night jam session! While I was attempting the Grand Slam (rainbow, brown, and brook). I struck out, nevertheless, it was an awesome trip. If you’re heading that way soon, keep in mind that most water below 2,500’ is too warm for trout fishing. The smallmouth don’t seem to mind though 😉
