Trips: “Teach Your Children Well”

Here is a trip report from Bob Trigg who took his son and family fishing at Westover Farms. As in the song by Crosby, Stills and Nash, Teach Your Children, Bob found out that nothing beats teaching your son to fly fish and to see the joy in his eyes. Whether your children are in their forties, teens or younger teach them and take them fishing. You will never regret it.

Westover Farms-Fishing report

How many of us remember our first trout (or for that matter our first fish)?  I don’t.  I can surmise, but when you get down to it, it’s a bit of a puzzle.  I know my father took me (first fish), and I’m guessing it was a hot dog and a bobber   That said, we all can remember that we love fishing and it started when we were kids. (or adults-it doesn’t matter)

New member (1/20/20) you guys are amazing   KK is one of the best people I have ever met.  Not that I need to tell you all    Hence the reason I am writing this report

I Fly fished from 1982- 2002 and then life got in the way……..Funny thing happened during Covid 19

After the “bad work call,” in March I was kind of ticked off and told my wife I’m going to go fishing in the pond behind the house   My 8-year-old Boy said, “Daddy, can I come and fish too”?

And it began-Liam is hooked!……. (see the Bluegill Picture)

Yes, I am a proud Papa, no doubt.  This son of mine is a prodigy-more to come on that.  Of course, spin casting is no good “Daddy I want a Fly rod too, just like you” (bought a Redington Minnow and Reel) Some of you might remember him from the visits on the webinars.  He liked to sit in and see you guys

What do you want to do for you Birthday?  I want to go trout fishing Daddy

So here I stand writing this report and my 9-year-old Liam (B-day 6-23) has been out fishing me for a solid month or so in the back pond (wooly buggers, poppers mop worms, etc.), But….  Its time to go trout fishing………

Off we go to Westover Farms

Tom and Lisa could not be more accommodating.    Great people, and the accommodations were fantastic.  Just a great experience.    The fishing………  well it started off a bit rocky at 1 PM in the heat of day.  Granted, I’m no Matt McClure, Jim Craig, Kenny Klimes,  etc., but I thought it would be like riding a bike and it would all come back to me and I could be a top guide for Liam.  It did, eventually when the evening hit.  Several trout on scuds, blond leeches and cerise worms, hares ears.  Problem was my little buddy couldn’t get the fish on.  I spent most of the first day as CTO (Chief Tangle Officer and Chief Tying Officer) Many, many tie ups.

Liam was not happy going to bed that first night fishless.  I promised him it would be better the next morning (and secretly hoped I was right as well)

It was.  The morning led off with a tiny little white fly hatch.  Midges, Trico’s, I’m not sure, but I knew white and small should be the way to go.  Tied on a few size 18/20 light cahills and off we went.  Liam chucked it out there about 20 feet and BAMB!  The best sounds I have ever heard on a stream- “Daddy, I got one”.  Being used to small bass I had to coach him a bit. “let him run, rod high, turn him towards the net” All of which he did fantastically.  Boys, I could not be prouder of my son.  He did great.   3 more trout on the sunken dry fly and in true fashion for a 9-year-old he looked at me and said he was ready to go get his doggy Harley.  It wasn’t the most relaxing day I have ever had on a stream, but without exception, it was the best.  I have memories and pictures of my boys first trout fishing trip!

OK, one more cast from Dad.  Size 20 red/black zebra midge-see pics.  One of my biggest trout and a great net man to boot.   Team Trigg!  So now every night all I hear is “when are we going again Daddy?”  Soon my son, soon.  Proud to be part of this organization and look forward to you guys helping turn my 9-year-old into a world class fisherman.  Look forward to fishing again soon, and seeing you guys as well.

Don’t discount Westover as a super place to fish gentlemen.  That said, I want to say a special thank you to Bob Wanzel for taking the time to capture the picture of me and Liam.  It was hard to take the cell phone on the water both days.  (Bob is the kind of person I told Liam all trout fisherman should aspire to be.  Just a great guy) Thank you Bob W, you are a gentleman and a scholar.  Look forward to seeing you all soon.
