Six of our FATC fished Montauk a few days ago with much success. With six guys fishing of course a myriad of flies were used. The park was not crowded and the guys had plenty of room to fish in the fly fishing only area. Both the morning and afternoon fishing was good but the flies used had to change with the conditions. We did some euro nymphing, dead drifting, swinging and dry fly fishing which all proved to be successful. The weather was beautiful and they were only threatened by storms but no rain.
The top flies were midges (shiny ones like P&P), san juan worms, soft hackles, frenchies, sparkle caddis, and a few more thrown in for good measure. It seemed the faster water produced more catches but fish were everywhere and sight fishing was the name of the game for the day. The fish caught ranged from 8″ – 16″.
We also found a new location for fellowship dinner per recommendation from fellow FATC member, Jim Franke. It’s the Barn & Grill in Bourbon. On the way home from fishing just take the Bourbon exit and look to your right as exit the ramp. It looks like a little red barn and has the best fired chicken. We gave their chicken 5 stars. We were too full to eat dessert but they did have some homemade pies that looked pretty good! Oops, almost forgot – Sid saw a bald eagle. 🙂
