(Trip report from Bill Byington) Just wanted to drop you an email about my trip to Montauk (Dec. 18th). The day started off good with four trout caught on a Chocolate Covered Cherry, Then it slowed down drastically. I moved to fish below the bridge and nothing was going on I was swinging a soft hackle and had one hit and that was it. After a lunch break, I moved to the area above the big rock and it stayed slow until I tied on a Mop fly. I fished it around the rock and put three more trout in the net. I continued to fish but again the fish turned off. I tried midge patterns, Barr’s emergers, Copper Johns and it stayed slow. I tied on a Rusty brown Wooly bugger and started swinging and stripping and when I returned to the rock I started catching fish. I finished out the day with that fly. Five on the bugger almost all of the fish caught ran around 14 inches with just one dink early. It was a pretty good day but the fish are really slowing down, They must be wising up to us fisherman. It pays to go to school. I hope to see you guys soon.
