Despite the heat index forecasted at 105, a dedicated group of FATC headed to the Current River to test the waters. The group included Mike Bisaga, Jim Craig, Kenny Klimes, Vernon Preston, Dave Komor, Steve “Big Dog” Baker, Ken Welter, Al Blair and Al Harper.
With the temps in the low 100’s, most opted to wet wade. If you have not tried it, it is the way to go this time of year.
To start the morning, a small group headed below the cable to avoid the regular Montauk crowds. Several fish we caught by Kenny, Jim and Steve. The hot flies outside the park were the “blow torch” and “the hair of the dog”.  The rest of the group started inside the park. The crowds were not too bad, but bigger than I had expected.
Mike was christening his new euro rod which he had won at the FATC Charity dinner. A couple of quick trout out of the first hole, and it was no longer a new rod. In the park, fish seemed to be hitting small white midges in the morning, and I believe all the guys had at least a few fish in hand by lunchtime.
Both groups met back up at the Stagg picnic table for lunch and were joined by Al Harper, who came down separately with his Flycraft to fish and float the following day.
After lunch, the fish seemed to switch to black midges. Many fish were caught on them as well as some surface action on an Elk Hair Caddis by Ken. Results in the afternoon varied. Some said they had better luck than the morning, others did not. Â
The hot flies of the day were: Blow Torch, Hair of the Dog, Black Midges, White Midges, Cracklebacks, and white Mop.
Want to go fishing, but these trips never work into your schedule? There is an easy solution, just plan one around your schedule. Post it on the calendar and guys will join. If you have any questions on how to do it, just contact one of the regulars. They will tell you everything they know.
