Five of us headed to Montauk state park to graduate another member of the 2017 Fall fly fishing class. Doug Christopher was ready to get his waders wet as he joined Kenny Klimes, Barry Dunnegan, Bill Byington and a mystery man. It was a cloudy day with temperatures in the 40s in the morning and 50s in the afternoon. Everyone headed to different spots on the river in the morning with some in the fly fishing only area and some fishing all the way to the campground area. At lunch there were mixed reports on the “catching” side but all found the park pretty much empty and all to themselves. Doug worked hard for his graduation, missing several hookups but he did bring one nice rainbow to the net and one almost in the net until the trout shook loose. Everyone caught fish this day with the best flies being the P&P midge, Cerise worm, copper john, black caddis, glo-bug pattern, and the “freezer” fly made up by Barry. At the end of the day Kenny cornered one of the hatchery workers who said they will be stocking fish each month in the park. He said there could be up to 10,000 fish stocked until March 1st. Not sure if it will be that many but there are lots of fish in the park so don’t miss out on winter fishing at Montauk.
