The weather man said it would be the best day of the week, in the low 50s. So, of course you go fishing! With eight fly fishers in tow we headed to Maramec Spring park because it has been fishing well as of late. Rudy Dodorico, Barry Dunnegan, Scott Payne, Jim Craig, Paul Schneider, Pete Drochelman, Bill Byington and Kenny Klimes made the trip. The morning was cold despite what the weatherman said the afternoon was going to be like. We were in the water by 8:15am – which I believe was too early but remember fishing at any time is better than a sharp stick in the eye!!
The fishing was slow most of the day. It wasn’t until the afternoon that it started to pick up a little – and very little that was. Not sure if it was the barometric pressure or a front went through (or we just didn’t know what the fish wanted) but the fishing was the slowest we have seen this winter. Fish were caught on midges, the “abomination”, leeches, egg patterns and well, that was about it. Scott and Bill had the prize for the biggest fish as they both had a trout in the 18-inch class. Probably the most important thing that we learned this day was how to pee with your waders on. We discovered a great technique found in a blog on the “troutbitten” web site and it worked. So, all is not lost on a trip when the fishing is poor – we always learn something.
A fellowship dinner at Hicks BBQ and of course, big desserts makes up for the entire day. Winter season ends February 11th so don’t miss out.
