Three of us Matt McClure, David Maloney and I Jason Edwards set out on Thursday night (July 18th) to head down to the Current river. The goal was to float & fish from Baptist camp to Cedar Grove – 7 miles of some of the most scenic river in Missouri. Our first stop was Reeds Cabin. The cabins were nicer than we expected, but the customer service needed a bit of polishing. More on that later, after dropping off our gear in the cabin we headed down to Montauk Lodge to grab some ice cream and cinnamon rolls for breakfast the next day.
We woke up on Friday to Matt McClure goofing off. After having a quick breakfast of cinnamon rolls. We attempted to have coffee at Reeds, but she turned us away?, so we headed off to Jadwin Canoe rentals. They were going to shuttle our car for us. They are a great outfit very friendly and fair prices.
Finally, we got on the river about 9 am, after setting up our kayaks. Matt and David both have Fishing kayaks and I had a sit on top. While those back home suffered extreme temps, we kept nice and cool. We were very happy about that since we had expected temps pushing 100 degrees.
The fishing stunk to say the least as the whole day we landed 6 fish maximum. We used every trick in the book, but nothing worked. We used midges, dries, nymphs, streamers sinking line and every combo you could think of we just couldn’t pull it together. But that seemed to be the story of everyone. Matt did the best on midges toward the end of the day. We didn’t let the poor fishing spoil the day. We stamped FDIC on this trip when we departed. If you’re wondering what that is, you don’t spend much time in that neck of the woods. David cooked hot dogs river side for us and we talked about the new FATCF (the F stand for floaters) that we will be starting up – new members are welcome. The day ended with dinner at the lodge, Lunker Burgers all around please!!!
Day two we hit Cardiac Hill, when we arrived we weren’t sure we would be able to cross but found a place to make it safely across. Cardiac wasn’t fishing well at all, only one smallmouth was landed no bumps or tugs reported all day. But hey, we had lots of laughs FDIC is stamped on all FATCF trips so join up now. We are talking about a trip to the Niangua River in the fall.
Sincerely,
Jason Edwards
