Recently got back from fishing & camping along the headwaters of the Missouri River in MT. This is where the Missouri (longest river in the US) begins. It’s where the Jefferson, Madison & Gallatin Rivers merge to form the MO River. Spent 4 days jet rafting back and forth a roughly 10 mile stretch with my cousin Lawrence who lives in Bozeman. Fishing was tough but we managed to put a good handful of browns and bows in the net. I had the opportunity to experience what is considered the March Caddis hatch that actually started late April this year. Truly amazing. It was like a blizzard that would last from approximately 10am through well into the evening non-stop. Along with the Caddis hatch there was a prolific hatch of Black, Golden, Skwala Stonefies and brown Mayfly’s. The hatches were so prolific they would be all over you including in your mouth if you didn’t keep it closed. Absolutely insane and something I had never experienced before. Unfortunately, being that the hatches were so prolific it made fishing tough because there was so much real bug food for the trout to gorge on. Seemed they weren’t real interested in artificial.
We brought all our gear and equipment on the raft and tent camped along the river under dark starry skies and yes, lots of bugs. Our tents were covered with Stoneflies at night.
It’s always great to meet up with my cousin and spend time in remote locations where you can really appreciate Gods Creation all around you.
