I had the opportunity to meet a friend in Wyoming. I flew into Jackson Hole and drove just over an hour and half to Dubois, Wyoming. Most of the drive was through the Grand Tetons National Park. The weather was great, except for some strong winds on one of the days. Given the many wild fires in the area, the smoke became strong at times. But that didn’t slow us down. The town of Dubois was great. It was a bit more crowded than normal, given it was the staging area for all the firefighters in town helping fight the fires. Two highly recommended motels across from the fly shop; The Black Bear Inn and Trails End Motel.
We connected with Micah Furman, owner and guide at Wind River Flyfitter, who guided us for both days. If you are ever in that area, I highly recommend Micah, who knows the best spots to fish and is a super nice guy. Micah had us covering a lot of water over those two days. We fished various stretches of the Wind River, which is considered one of the best fly fishing spots. We primarily fished nymphs, with a heavier Prince Nymph or Pheasant Tail on top trailed by a smaller Nymph. It seems the black zebra midge is what they were hitting on the most. We caught rainbows, browns, yellowstone cutthroats and cutbows and plenty of whitefish “whities”. We had to find deep holes to catch many of the larger fish. Some stretches of the river were pretty shallow. Two good reminders for this trip were knowing how to roll cast (given the tight spaces) and getting your flies down fast. I used the Oros indicator for the first time and loved it! Given how many times we had to adjust our lines for various depths, the Oros indicator made it super easy. I used a 5 wt, 9 ft Orvis Helios rod with 5 wt line and 4x tippet.
Overall, great trip and experience. I would highly recommend fishing the Wind River.
