A Double Graduation.
On Thursday, June 5th, Jim Craig and Glenn Haake took Greg Haley and Steve Avedisian to Montauk for a graduation trip. They were joined by Ken Welter, Don Varner, Bob Palisch and Steve Baker. The group arrived at the park to find that the weather forecast and previous rain kept the crowd away. The park was fairly empty, giving the FATC group room to spread out. It turned out to be a beautiful day, with no rain. The river was low and clear, even with the rain the previous day.
After gearing up at the naturalist cabin, the group fanned out across the park. Jim, Steve, Glenn and Greg headed to the boulder where they practiced some casting then went to work. Greg was quickly on with a soft hackle and Steve joined in with a wooly bugger. The students worked on several styles of fishing with mixed results. The most active fly was the blue and black wooly bugger (not black or green).
After the morning session everyone met back at the Stag tables to enjoy lunch and swap stories.
After lunch everyone fanned out across the park to find the fishing has slowed down considerably. There weren’t a lot of fish to be seen or caught above the boulder. Although Steve Baker did well with a caddis dry fly and Bob Palisch caught fish with his cream mop fly.
After a beautiful day of fishing with light crowds, the group headed into Salem for the obligatory Pizza Inn dinner (since Kenny wasn’t there).
Another beautiful day of fishing with two new graduates, who seemed hooked. There are a couple more trips in the next few weeks on the calendar. Make sure you join in on the fun. Get out there!
