Trips: Current River Summer Float

Harold Bates & me (Matt McClure) recently embarked on a 3 day/night camping trip to the Current River.  We both towed our campers down to Pinecrest Campground.  1st day we fished Cedar Grove below the low water bridge early evening due to the high daytime temps.  We both were able to pluck a couple bows out in a short timeframe. The 2nd day we met up with the FATC group trip and fished the park.  The park was tough fishing with just a handful caught.  The 3rd day we floated from Baptist Camp to Parker’s Ford.

The catch count on the float was considerably better with Harold and I averaging 1-3 fish per stop which we were happy with as fishing outside the park tends to have smarter more spookier fish.  We stopped approximately dozen times to get out and fish what we thought would be prime areas based on the sun & high temperatures.  We both Euro-nymphed the entire float and concentrated on water that had what I would consider a medium flow (oxygenated) and deeper troughs (cooler and more protection with the extreme sun).

This was Harold’s first time floating this section and it appears he’s hooked on float/fishing and actively pursuing the purchase of a kayak.  The winning flies were the Blow Torch & Perdigons.  Yes, the temps were high so we wet waded but the beauty of floating allows you to cool down quickly by submersing in the cold spring water.
