Trips: Awesome Day to Graduate

Go fishing when the weather reports are bleak, and you just might get rewarded by the fly-fishing gods.  The forecast on this day was for rain all day. The morning drive proved that this could be very true. But as John Muckerman, Mark Hendrix, Bill Byington, Paul Schneider, Jim Franke, Kenny Klimes, Glenn Haake and Vernon Preston (new graduate) arrived at Montauk park, bought their tags, the rain stopped – FOR THE REST OF THE DAY!! We heard later that it poured all day in St Louis – but none here on this day.  Perfect conditions – cool, cloudy and not crowded!

Vernon Preston was on his graduation trip today and hit an opportune time to fish or should I say catch. As the other six went their ways, Kenny and Vernon hit the smooth flat area below the boulder.  The trout were rising so they threw on a soft hackle and Vernon graduated immediately.  He enjoyed swinging soft hackles so much that when Kenny said let’s go over another technique and change flies, he shot Kenny a funny look as to say “What???”.  But switching to a small black woolybugger worked just as well. Then they practiced dead drifting – time for lunch.  We all met up for lunch and discussed our best techniques for the morning and got ready for the afternoon fish.

The afternoon fishing was awesome for everyone.  All types of flies were used with the best being midge larva, black mohair leeches and wooly buggers, cracklebacks, dry flies (ants and parachute adams), san juan worms, nymph patterns and others. The guys even had a chance to do some sight fishing with black olive mohair leeches as you could see the trout attack the fly – set the hook.  Of note – Kenny talked with a gentleman from Ft Worth, Texas who says he reads and follows our website regularly.  The guys met up at 5 pm. Told fishing stories of the day all the way to Hicks BBQ for dinner. Vernon ordered the traditional initiation Ory’s Spud for dinner (along with a few others) and an awesome trip was complete. Congrats to Vernon on his graduation!!
