Another FATC graduate, Jacob Ferguson, and the FATC model search is complete. More on that later. A total of 6 FATC brothers headed to Montauk on Friday, 6/25. In addition to fishing, this trip had 2 goals. One, to graduate Jacob, who was in the last fly fishing class, and two, to take some “official” FATC promo photos that will be used on our new trade show banners, website and such. Both tasks were successful.
The park was a little crowded, but not bad. We had choice of fishing location most of the day. Some of us stayed in the park, others hit Tan Vat. With the exception of one, not so considerate individual, everyone in the park kept their distance and was very respectful. With temps in the 90’s, several of us decided to wet wade. I had not done it before, and I am now wondering what took me so long to try it. Makes for a very comfortable day. Best flies in the park were orange or white crane fly larva (mop), hares ear nymph, and green crackleback. Many fish were caught by all. Water was low and very clear. Light tippet is a must. We used 6x most of the day. Good news is, I saw more fish than I have seen in years, and everything caught was in the 14-17 inch range.
Kenny, John and Pete decided to fish outside the park and check out the waters there. They started the morning at Tan Vat with Pete directing John and Kenny for banner pictures. Hopefully the photo shots won’t shown our ugly mugs. The fishing was good for some of us 😉 And the “new” Hair of the Dog fly was a killer netting well over 10 trout, both browns and rainbows. The water outside the park is also low and clear which means you have to be on your game. No room for error or sloppiness. The three met up with Mike, Jacob, Sid in the park (only Vernon was MIA) for lunch. After lunch Kenny, John and Pete decided to fish below the cable which was good but the temps were hot and made the cool water more enjoyable. They quit early, around 3pm, because Pete had another engagement at home. So John and Kenny had their fellowship dinner at the Big Chief restaurant in Wildwood – never been there? It’s a must (their lasagna is to die for – doesn’t even look like lasagna!!).
Now, wondering who FATC’s top model is? I could tell you, but it would be better to volunteer for one of our community events where we are displaying our new banners to find out. They will be on display at the fly fishing expo in Branson at the end of July. That would be a great event to volunteer for!!!
Ok, I’ll bite. What is Hair of the Dog fly.
