And Then a Party Broke Out After being fed up this extreme heat, Miles Meyer, Bill Lowry, and Jim Craig took advantage of a short reprieve to fish Maramec Spring on July 12th. Evidently, we were not the only ones with this great idea. Because of the many people there, we fished the spring from the end of the parking lot down to the river, and we fished around the bend. I would have to say that the fish were still a little in the doldrums of summer, but we put several in the net. We tried nearly every fly in our boxes, and we finally tricked them with stone files, a white Mayer’s mini leach (a Lowry special), red copper johns, tiny pheasant tail nymphs, olive wooly buggers, black wooly buggers, and a pink egg pattern. The river was running slow, low and warm. And no doubt that was the catalyst for the party. After lunch, the three of us walked back to fish the river bend again only to be greeted by a 3+ family swim, music, and adult beverage party. It was quite a party that interrupted the tranquil afternoon we were expecting. Fortunately, the swimmers stayed upstream in the warm water and we still picked up a few nice fish from the bend down to the cabin. The best was yet to come as the food and pie/cake at the Barn and Grill restaurant did not disappoint. The trip ended with a great discussion about nymph rigging on the drive home. In fact, it was so intense that we missed the Eureka exit. Not to worry, we needed the extra drive time to finish our discussion. Thanks to Bill for setting up the trip and Miles for driving….I got to tag along in exchange for writing this fishing report. “
