It was a beautiful day to graduate on the water for Bob Wilson. Bob traveled a long way to get this one done. He is one of those Illinois boys. One this day Jim Craig, Barry Dunnegan, Glenn Haake joined Kenny in graduating Bob from the 2021 Winter fly fishing class. Since Bob had to travel a long way, he made a full weekend and then some to fish at Montauk. The graduation took place on Monday, April 5th.
As Barry, Jim and Glenn headed upstream to the fly fishing only area, Bob and Kenny started the morning just downstream from the boulder. Bob was able to practice several techniques before lunch to include stripping buggers, swinging soft hackles to dead drifting nymphs. Bob was definitely experienced and had fly fished before – and it showed. He had no problem with the techniques, but now it was time to figure out what the fish wanted. Bob missed a few fish early with the buggers and soft hackles but bagged a few with the dead drift technique. Bob and Kenny met the others for lunch and talked tactic for the rest of the afternoon. The others came back for lunch with their stories of what worked and what did not.
Kenny took Bob to the beginning of the Current river to the top of the fly fishing only area. Bob caught on fast as Kenny showed him the best areas to fish and took advantage of the “catching”. Kenny and Bob did well with nymphs – Bob caught 4-5 on the copper john alone. They met up with the others later in the afternoon and they had fish in the net too. We all packed it up around 4:30pm for an awesome day on the water. We were not able to take Bob out for fellowship dinner and the traditional Ory’s Spud since he was with his wife and they were staying one more day at Montauk. He will have to get his Ory’s Spud on another trip. But Bob did great, and I am sure had a fun day. Congratulations to Bob – another Illinois added to the fellowship.
