Larry Farrar sends us this report after fishing Montauk State Park with a friend after Christmas.
Joe Walker and I traveled to Montauk State Park to fly fish on December 27th. The stream was in good shape with very clear water. We met in the camp ground and wanted to see how the stream may have changed from last time we were there. We fished the section of stream 2 times through and only saw 2 other fishermen during the 2nd pass through. All the fish caught were rainbow ranging in size from 11″ – 19″. Most of the fish were taken on either a white thread jig or a flash back pheasant tail nymph.
We took a break for lunch and enjoyed some of the great weather we were having. After lunch we walked to the top of the park to try the stream there. Both Joe and I put a San Juan worm as a dropper. Most of the fish taken in the early afternoon were on the San Juan worm with all being rainbows. Around 2PM I changed over to a Partridge and Orange soft hackle with a Black and crystal flash soft hackle following. The bite was not as often as I had with the San Juan Worm however the takes were more aggressive while swinging the flies.
All in all we had a great day on the stream and had the opportunity to catch up with each other during these crazy times.
