Dave Beerbower, Gary Elliott and Jim Franke decided on the spur of the moment to take a quick trip to Montauk State Park last Wednesday and we could not have picked a nicer day. It started out cool in the morning, but by lunch time we were fishing in our shirtsleeves. We started fishing just above the cable and things were a bit slow until Jim caught fire with a Hare’s ear nymph. He caught several nice ones and we all followed suit. After lunch, we decided to try the park. The most productive area was in the long stretch just above Walter’s hole. There were lots of fish visible and the catching was not great, but steady. Gary was catching them with the Hare’s Ear and I had some luck with soft hackles. We quit just before 5pm and decided to try the Barn and Grill in Bourbon. We heard the chicken was famous and were not disappointed. In fact, Jim and I commented it was the best we had ever eaten. A beautiful day of fishing with friends.
