FATC kicked off its 2023 fly-tying season Thursday night, November 30, 2023, with a full-house
beginner class at the Chesterfield Presbyterian Church Commons facility. The class was taught by founding FATC member Terry Seaton. Seventeen enthusiastic fly-tying beginners
were mentored by fifteen of our experienced tiers. Our experienced guys sat with and
provided the new tiers with one-on-one, personal coaching as Terry had them practice each
skill and tie each fly.
Terry is a great fly tier and an awesome educator. He had the perfect combination of skills to
transform our beginners into proficient fly tiers in just two hours. Terry came with all the
materials organized into bags for each tier and the experienced guys allowed the new tiers
to use their tools for the evening. During those two hours, the beginners learned thirteen fly-
tying skills and tied three flies: the wooly bugger, the crackleback and the P&P midge pupa.
The beginners learned skills that will make them better fly fishers, and they are now fully
prepared to join the rest of our fly-tying classes. Our experienced tiers picked up a few tips
and enjoyed the opportunity to share their passion for this hobby in a personal way. That’s
what makes FATC so special.
The FATC fly-tying season is off and running through April 2024. Our next tying session is
December 21, 2023. Check the FATC calendar for details and dates. Hope to see you there.
