A Welcome and a Graduate!

As Kenny was going on day four of fishing, he headed to Montauk to enjoy a welcome of Chad Negley and his son, Caleb. Chad was one of the pastors that Kenny partnered with during the Altar fishing event back in November. Chad asked Kenny to fish again with him, but this time Chad brought his son. Caleb. So, as we do in the FATC we made it into a FATC trip. Along with Kenny, Chad and Caleb, FATC members Jim Craig, Matt McClure, his son Sam, Bob Hassett, Steve Baker, Sid Aslin and Jim Franke joined the Monday trip. The park was a touch more crowded than normal (Spring Break in Missouri) but as always thinned out in the afternoon.

Fishing for all was tough in the morning with everyone using an eclectic selection of flies. Chad and Caleb fished with Kenny all afternoon and did well considering the circumstances. Caleb, a high school sophomore, had one great cast and had no problems pulling in more fish than his dad (Ha).  His dad caught a couple big trout that were added to a stringer for dinner that night but for some reason the stringer fell off his belt and they had to join us for Mexican food instead!

As always, the fishing was good, but the fellowship was better. Everyone talked of their catches at Mexican dinner that night in Salem. Then Matt McClure who is working on getting our FATC a cabin that we can use anytime we would like. It’s only five minutes from Montauk park and sleeps up to five guys. The details are still being worked out as Kenny, Jim, Matt, and Sam stayed Monday night to check out the cabin. It will cost $125 for up to four guys to stay (yes, everyone gets their own bed) and $150 for five guys. We will be the only ones using this cabin. Watch for full details soon.

On Tuesday, Kenny was graduating another member from the Winter fly fishing class – Mark Robert. As on Monday, the fishing was tough. Everyone was having a tough day including others that were fishing Montauk. The afternoon again proved better fishing for all. The word is the water temperatures need to get a little warmer for the trout to “turn on”. Just a few more warmer days! Mark did great as he went through all techniques but had to nymph fish in the afternoon as the trout didn’t want to rise to the surface. Unfortunately, many of the guys that spent two days on the water had to get home early and Mark missed the fellowship dinner. Mark, we will make that up to you in future trips!

Don’t miss the warmer months of March and April as the parks will be “more” crowded as we get closer to the summer months.
