ParticipantI have in the past year gone exclusively to the Firehole sticks to the point of purchasing 30 boxes. I like the wide gap,the sharpness as well as the look. I have not tried their stones, beads, yet. Waiting until Firehole has slotted beads. I always receive fast shipping.
I also made a purchase from Dooleys Fly Fishing. I wanted to see what was in the Hackle grab bag for $5.00, along with a couple of other items. I felt the grab bag of hackle well worth the price. I think there was 10 individual long hackles varying size and colors. The order was filled and shipped the same day I ordered.

ParticipantI think it is a Hackle Guard. It is used to hold Hackle back away from the hook eye while whip finishing.

ParticipantBob,
I am 11 weeks post operation for a grade 3 shoulder separation. The surgeon told me 16 weeks minimum healing process. I have been doing passive PT for the last three weeks. That means no weights, just stretching and some elastic cords. I have been allowed to drive short distances. Bored to death, have not had any summer. I did tie a couple of Hares Ear flies yesterday. I see the doctor next week, hopefully PT with weights will start soon. Thanks for asking.

ParticipantI am an old infantry guy, always cautious around the old sailors in the group.
Tim McCoy
ParticipantWhen walking into restaurant, check the fly of the guy behind you.

ParticipantThanks to those that responded. Last night I chatted on line with Joe at Firehole. He suggested I go with their 633 or their 839. The 839 is a 3XL, but I figured I can tie small. I also order the 633, because a tier can never have too many hooks. Actually, I think in the future the Firehole brand will become so popular that they will become impossible to get. If you haven’t tried Firehole hooks, well, get some. I placed an order around 11 o’clock this morning, I was notified shortly before lunch that my order had shipped. Supper fast service and with a FATC discount.

ParticipantI have had Korkers BOA system for the last 6-7 years. I really like them particularly in freezing conditions. Just pop the dial and step out, no freezing noodle shoe strings to deal with.

ParticipantThanks Mike. I guess we can call this the universal fly. It looks good in the fly tying vise. I have added a red or orange glass bead right behind the eye of the hook to make an egg sucking leech of it. Landon’s book, I think I have a copy of that laying under the bed. I gotta go fishing.
Tim McCoy
ParticipantSo, how do you fish this leech? Do you strip it, fish it on the swing, under an indicator, or tight line it?

ParticipantThe Feather Craft catalog list two sizes of pine squirrel. The standard for hook size 10 and larger and the micro size 10 and smaller. I think Mike is correct we need the micro. I will take Mikes word 1/16″. I got this fly on the brain now. I would think it would be possible to add a red or orange bead to make an egg sucker out of it.
Tim McCoy
ParticipantThanks Mike. I figured the rabbit might mat when wet. I tried cutting a strip out of a red squirrel hide that I have, what a mess. I don’t like steering to far away from fly recipes. Nice to know Feather Craft has micro Pine Squirrel strips. They probably have ostrich also. I will drive to FC again tomorrow. Glad to have our FATC 10% discount.

ParticipantSo, Rick how did you resolve your fly line issue? What did you dress your TFO PRO II with. I have the same rod I have Rio Gold 5wt. line on it. Works great.
Tim McCoy
ParticipantWhere do I start? In the beginning I was ten years old, a big surprise to my mother. Anyway, I started fly fishing at age ten. My Dad had been an avid fly fisherman for years. He had two Tonka Queen split bamboo fly rods in his arsenal, his then one for everyone else. These rods were manufactured by Horrocks Ibbotson, Utica N.Y. These rods where made and purchased pre WWII. The war caused an embargo to be placed on products from Japan, no bamboo. Bamboo rods were cheap pre war $7-$8. I thought I would inherit these rods. However, 4 younger brothers made kindling of them. I mention these rods just as a little history and back ground.
Bamboo Rods First:
Shakespeare split bamboo Triumph 8’6″ describe as a Trout Weight Rod. This rod needs restoration and then hung on the wall. It has beautiful bamboo.
My next rod is a, R.H. Wood by Constable of Bromley, England a 6″9′ 4wt. A beauty for small streams. I do fish this rod.
Then an Orvis Delux 7′ 6wt. SN 38552. I sent this info to Orvis to get the history on the rod. Orvis told me who built the rod and the time period. The rod was shipped to a fly shop In Argentina, traveled the world and was bought by me at a garage sell in the 70’s. I remember the lady that sold it to me, she was ranting and raving about her husband that she was divorcing. She wanted $100, we settled at $50. I ran like a thieving dog.
Modern day stuff
My TFO 9’0″ 5wt. ProII. I bought this upon graduation from my 2012 FATC class. It is a good functional and versatile rod. Medium Fast Action Rod, I enjoy fishing it.
Winston Nexus 8’6″ 4wt. Fast Action Rod. Fast action rods and I don’t get along so well. I would like to part ways with it. The Nexus is no longer being manufactured by Winston. Collectors item.
Next my newest addition. A Moonshine “Epiphany” 10’6″ 3wt. nymphing rod. I have not fished it yet. Pretty rod with matt black finish. I am really excited about getting on the water with this rod. It was a birthday present from wife. Yes, she knows the price. You will not steal it from her when I am gone.
There are a few more fly rods in the rafters of my basement, but what is above is basically all that is worth mentioning.
P.S. I have no stickers on any of my cars.Tim McCoy
ParticipantStreamers!!! Oh man, I will have to go to Feather-Craft again.
Tim McCoy
ParticipantI can see in our Wednesday night fly tying sessions nymphs, nymphs and more nymphs. I love it.
