You are CORRECT, Grasshopper! It is a hackle guard. Most kits don’t have them anymore because I think they are more of a pain in the butt to use. Remember to use a short coffee straw instead!!

Now you must take the pebble from my hand!

Happens to every guy sometimes this does! Always trust the Force, not the Corp. For all grasshoppers, danger lurks when sirens blow, careful one must be!!

    Oh Grasshopper,

To catch, one must have working fly.
Always pass on what you have learned!

Also, your fly should be checked after fishing when walking into restaurant to eat!!

    Grasshoppers:

I think Master Klimes wrote an article in the fly shop section about magnifiers to wear when you are tying at another place besides your fly tying desk at home. It seems he likes them. Check out his article!!

I hear he is a fairly good fly tier and fly fisher……..

    Oh Grasshopper,

You seek knowledge which is good. Ask and you shall receive. There are now four videos on how to tie a parachute post and how to finish them in the Education menu in the fly tying section. Seek the section on fly tying tips and the last four videos are what you long for….

Well said, oh faithful Grasshopper! Don’t blame slow fishing on weather but use your knowledge to catch the trout. Remember, the trout’s brain is the size of a pea and ours is much larger. Well, most of ours.

    Oh Grasshopper,

I’m sure Kenny discussed this in your fly fishing class but I am positive that the FATC members will definitely help you with your question.

    Ah Grasshoppers,
You must play this music to tie well.

    Oh Grasshopper Oldani,
An old oriental curse has been placed on your head by one who never makes excuses! When Salt Gills can take the fly from my hand then and only then will he be ready.

If you wet wade in the summer, in the cold river, and you go too deep your cojones will get cold and shrivel.

Here are three ways to start when you get a stuck rod section:
    Grasshopper

    1. If you are still near the cold river, set your two stuck sections under the cold water for a few minutes and then give it a try.

    2. Carry with you a section of “rubber” shelving liner – similar what Kenny passed out to use for Ken’s Crazy ant. The rubber shelving liner will help you grasp the rod sections (above and below the ferrule) to pull apart. Don’t twist – pull straight.

    3. Have your fishing partner stand opposite of you and grab your rod with one hand above the stuck ferrule and below the stuck ferrule. You do the same thing facing him and then both pull evenly and straight in opposite directions.

4, If that doesn’t work, do what Kenny said and buy a new rod!

    Grasshopper,

Unfortunately, when you select your rod after casting it and know that it IS the rod for you, whatever reel seat design is on the rod, that’s what you get. So, something I wouldn’t worry about.

Good rod designers will put the proper reel seat on their rod, whether an uploading or downloading reel seat, that makes the reel “in balance” with the rod.

    Grasshopper,
This is a great question since many new fly fishers don’t know when and why to extend their leader when fishing.

First, when using a 9ft, 5x leader, the 5x portion/diameter of the leader is approximately 24 inches give or take a few inches from the end. If your plan is to be using a 5x leader for the fly you will be tying on to it (remember the power of 3) then you want to make sure that the end of your leader or the “tip” or “tippet” is 5x. So if a 9ft, 5x leader loses more than two feet of leader material (it is now 7ft long) the end of your leader will now be around 4x diameter. Remember, that is not what you want to use – you want it to be 5x. BUT don’t wait until your leader is 7ft long because when you tie on tippet material you have to use some tippet up just to tie your double or triple surgeon’s knot. So my recommendation is to keep your leader no shorter than 8ft. Once at 8ft add more 5x tippet to keep the end of your leader at approximately 9ft-10ft and at a 5x diameter.

Second, here is a new technique to try out. Buy a 3x or 4x, 7 1/2ft leader and add a tippet ring to the end of it. Now you can extend your leader with any size tippet that you want to use. Just add 2ft of 6x tippet if that’s what you need or 2ft of 5x tippet, etc. Just remember to put your tippet rings on at home and NOT on the water.
