ParticipantI use the Dinsmore Egg shot, recommended by Tom Hargrove. The shot stays in place with a few exceptions. I’ve found if I hang up on something in the stream and pull hard on the line the split shot may slide down the line towards the fly. The split shot is the pinch on type and I’ve also experienced it opening slightly after a period of hard fishing. I don’t know why it opens but when it happens I crimp it using my forceps and start fishing again.

ParticipantI agree with PDroc and Barry Dunnegan. The knot must be tied exactly as the video link above. I used the knot several years ago and it seemed to fail on me often so I gave up on it. About a year ago I saw the video link above and tied it as described making sure the tag end points at 90 degrees from the rest of the line. To my surprise the failing I’d experienced years ago came to an end. Since tying it that way the knot has held up well and has now become one of my favorite knots to use in most situations.

ParticipantI try to use an indicator that is sized just large enough to stay afloat during the drift. I prefer the New Zealand or the Lightning Strike indicator size 1/2″. I’ve seen other fishermen having a tough day catching fish and had them switch to one of those indicators. I then watched their day turn around with their catch rate increasing significantly. My opinion is that if the indicator is too large it can create resistance when a fish takes the fly and makes it difficult to visibly see movement of the indicator on the water.
