KeymasterOk, don’t get hung up with the terms; Euro nymphing and mono rig. They are essentially the same thing. Yes, if you do euro-nymphing how the “pros” do it, i.e. no indicator, no split shot, etc.. it is a “specific” way of fishing. But, you can fish long leader/mono rig/euro nymphing techniques anyway you want. Use split shot if you need it. Use an indicator if you need it. Use long mono lines if you need it. Domenic Swentosky lives and fishes in Pennsylvannia where rivers are not as “wide” as, let’s say, Colorado. So to say you don’t need “fly line” is a misnomer. How you fly fish depends on where you fish and the conditions you are presented. If you fish the small streams in Pennsylvannia then you can get away with using the “mono rig”. BTW, Joe Humphreys is also from Pennsylvannia. I’d like to see someone cast a streamer 60 -80 feet on the Colorado river without fly line. Just a thought….

KeymasterMouse flies are also great for bass. Don’t limit your fly fishing to just trout. The Morrish mouse is easy to tie and floats well. Land your mouse right up against the shore and give it some jerky swimming motion as your mouse tries to race (swim) to the other side of the shore. I’d tend to throw in the evening hours. Make sure your using at least 2x-3x tippet and hang on.

If you are buying them to use for tails then I would get a “tailing” pack. They are great for tails – strong and durable. Pick colors that match your fly but if confused go with a ginger or pardo (mottled look) color pack. My recommendation would be to buy good quality. They are expensive but I think are worth it for mayfly tails. You can always but micro-fibbets tails or even use an old paint bruch fibers for tail.
Happy Tying!

KeymasterHow about in an airport in another state – wearing your FATC cap or shirt – and a total stranger comes up to you and says, ” I love your web site!” Happens all the time!

KeymasterBest all around, I’d pick Amber. Gray lenses for sunny days. Yellow lenses in low light.

Good discussion topic. I usually don’t pick my rod for a specific location (I usually bring four rods on each trip). But I actually select the rod I will use by the water conditions, are the fish rising or not or just how I want to fish on this particular day.
If I’m going into a situation where I may throw bigger stuff – streamers, buggers, stoneflies. I’ll pick my rod that has a little more backbone – my Sage One, 9 foot, 5wt. The Sage One can also handle nymphing too.
If I’m going to dry fly, swing wet flies or fish small flies (even when nymphing) I really like my new 9 foot, 4wt, Orvis Helios 3F. Very sweet rod.
If I decide to nymph all day I’ll go with my Euro-nymphing rod. Mine is a Redington Hydrogen, 3wt, 10 foot. Euro-nymphing can get you into places that other techniques can’t. If there is a lot of pocket water or fast moving water I’ll load up my Hydrogen rod

KeymasterThank you FATC.
Like I have nothing else to do with my time I get a call from my Master “The Sensei of all Fly Fishers” asking me (no telling) that I must develop a class for euro nymphing techniques – and an actual hands on class to boot.
Ok, because I have no choice, I will put a class together on how to make leaders (and we will make leaders in the class) how to tie and place euro nymphing flies on your line and how to fish them. I’ll ask who would like to attend and depending on the numbers I will schedule the class.
How’s that? Is that fair?
Thanks for the extra work 😉
P.S. MofishMo, it’s spelled euro-nymphing not euro-nyphing! mmmmmmmmm
