KeymasterBill,
I can answer this question a little easier than the other you posted. With an 8ft rod, 4 wt and from your previous write up you mentioned fishing small streams. I would highly recommend the Scientific Angler (SA) floating fly line called Creek Trout line. It is an awesome line for small streams. There is more weight upfront in the line that allows it to cast VERY well for short casts (20 – 40 feet) but I can easily get casts up to 60-70 feet effortlessly. For small streams I don’t think you will need sinking tip line.
Hope this helps,

KeymasterBill,
You asked a lot of great questions but tough to answer here without writing a long book. First, if you live in the St Louis, Missouri region joining our fellowship and taking our fly fishing class would answer many of your questions. We have a very comprehensive class on fly fishing. But if you do not live in our area I would advise joining a fly fishing organization in your area. This would give you the opportunity to discuss techniques with other fly fishers as yourself and possibly take one of their classes.
If unable, then some books may help you with your answers. I think my favorite book for beginners is the Orvis Fly-Fishing Guide by Tom Rosenbauer. I find that is a very complete book to get any new fly fisher started. Orvis also has a great podcast to listen to that will answer many questions that you do have or didn’t know you had!
Please feel free to use our website for your fly fishing needs. Again, if you live in our area we would love to have you as a member. But, just because you are not in our area you can easily join and reap the many benefits that we provide our members. Our organization is now expanding to many other states beside just Missouri and Illinois.
Another other questions please hit us up in our forum.

KeymasterI have a tiny pond very close to my house and fish it when I’m sitting around at home doing nutin. I have an old rod and reel lined up and just grab and go. I bring a few Woolybuggers and poppers and “practice” but I catch a lot of panfish and a few bass too.

KeymasterGREAT ADVICE even if it isn’t raining in St Louis you need to ALWAYS check the flows and water depth. Where do you check the flows and depth??? ON OUR WEBSITE under water conditions menu!! We even have explanation of what it should be and shouldn’t be to be able to fish. Fish Smart!!

KeymasterMOfishMO? Who dat??
I like the OROS and for smaller flies the New Zealand indicator. But an indicator has to have several sizes, able to move up and down easily, and float well with the weight of the flies attached. Also I prefer white or clear if you can get those colors. Try to have colors that are similar to what is normally floating in the water (white foam) or similar to water bubbles (clear).

Here is a leader system from Jason Randall but there are many.
It uses Chameleon leader material and a tippet ring. Tie the leader material together with blood knots. This is for “Stream” fishing.
32″ of 20lb Chameleon
26″ of 15lb Chameleon
22″ of 10lb Chameleon
16″ of 8lb Chameleon
12″ of 5lb Chameleon
For longer leader add 12″ of 4lb Chameleon (but I do not add this part)
tie on tippet ring then add your 4-5 feet of 5x or 6x tippet to the ring
Here is leader system for River fishing:
32″ of 25lb Chameleon
26″ of 20lb Chameleon
22″ of 15lb Chameleon
16″ of 10lb Chameleon
12″ of 8lb Chameleon
For longer leader you can add 12″ of 5lb Chameleon (I do not) then add tippet ring. To tippet ring add2-3 feet of 4x – 5x
Give it a try. If the leader seems to long to turn over then take some leader material off.
For ESN leaders go to Devin Olsen’s website. There are “sort of” three types of ESN leaders. heavy – medium – light weight. If you have never done ESN before I recommend start with a “heavier” leader then work towards a light weight leader.
Here is JUST AN EXAMPLE of a heavier ESN leader: 12 feet of 15# or 20# Maxima Chameleon, 3 feet of 12# Amnesia or Chameleon, 18″ of 0.012 colored sighter material, tippet ring, then 6′-10′ of 4x or 5x tippet. I use 6x tippet the majority of the time. With this leader we use ESN fly line which is very thin fly line connected with a nail knot to the butt end of the leader.

KeymasterBob,
Great song and message! I hope we have guys that realize that life IS hard and that we need strong men in our lives to hold us up when we fall. And we have guys that will be willing to lift others up too.
Hope to see many of you at the FATC book study!

KeymasterThis book, more than any other I have read, has changed my view of Christianity and who Jesus really is. After reading Beautiful Outlaw, I basically said, “Now I can truly “hang ” with this guy – because I feel He truly understands ME!”

KeymasterI am a BIG fan of the BWO “Barr’s Emerger”. When trout are rising it’s my immediate go to fly. Yes, they are small but so, so effective!! Swing them by casting 45 degrees downstream.

KeymasterRob,
Just checked our closest guys to you are Jason Pair and Ryan Pennington.
