Yes Hargroves does rod testing. They don’t carry Scott but do have Sage, Winston and others. Stop in and talk to Craig. He has real world experience fishing these rods and also is a casting instructor. Best of luck in ur selection.

In Missouri, most fishing is nymphing. That usually means throwing a line that has (sometimes) a multi-fly rig with an indicator. That is more of a load to cast than just a single dry fly.
My 5 wt. has to do it all and be able to cast in the wind. A590 ONE is a pretty fast rod, n while it has plenty of long range and wind performance, not everyone can get comfortable with it.

A 905 Radian is my go to rod. The advertizing slogan ” Fast with Feel” is , for me, absolutely true. While a fast rod, it is still user friendly. Didnt take long to get the cast down with that rod. If u are located in STL, go by Feathercraft and give it a try.
While u are at it,also cast a Sage 590X. That is also one terrific rod. Not quite as much low end power as a Radian but very smooth and progressive in taper. I could be happy with either rod for a do it all 5 wt.

When dry fly fishing out west, guides will tell u that clear hot weather is not the best for fishing.
Our group ( to the man) had their best day ever when the sky’s were overcast, it was cool ( upper 70s) with a slight drizzle.
Fish don’t have eyelids n don’t like look up into the sun.

My sling has a d ring on the strap that is begind ur back. My net has the magnetic attachment on the basket end and the handle hangs down behind my right arm. Never in the way of my casting arm, just reach behind my back n grab the handle. I attach the end of the lanyard on the net to my wading belt so that the net is always attached to me. Works pretty slock.

    Martin,
I have owned n used the various waist packs, vests, and have now settled on a sling pack. I think any of the makes like Simms, Patagonia, or Fishpond work well.
One thought, dont get one that is too big. Big means u will pack more weight into it and that causes back pain. Pack lighter and u will feel better at the end of the day.

    Kenny,
This is my fourth season on Korker’s White Horse BOA boots. Wouldn’t go fishing without them. Have not had one issue with the BOA system, it just works great. Another plus for the Korkers is the interchangeable soles. Love them. I purchased the aluminum bar soles and they really grip rocks that others feel are very slippery. Again, another great feature of Korker boots.

I have the Korkers Whitehorse BOA boots. Love em. The vibram souls are good if unare headed into a drift boat or raft. Not enough grip on slimey rocks, took two swims finding out. Switched to the soles with the aluminum bars. Best move I ever made. Very sure footed on the most slipery of rocks.

Love the BOA laces, best invention for old men.

fly fishing about 12 when my uncle Frank got me started. Still have the Shakespear “Golden Rod”. About an 8′ 6 wt glass beast.

    1) Go to rod is a 9′ 5 wt Radian. I take this when I am unsure of conditions ( wind etc.)

    2) Winstin BIIIx 9′ 6 wt for big rivers n big fish. Great rod for out West on the Missouri or the big Chromers on the Shoshone.

    3) Sage 8’6″ 4wt. One. Great rod for the Missouri fishing we do. Drys or multi-fly nymph rigs, it does it all.

    4) Bamboo- 7’3″ 4 wt Sweetgrass Pent. Three piece rod that I am learning how to slow down to cast. Just the rod for a small creek like Westover Farms.
