    Bill,

Best piece of gear I ever purchased.

the podiatrist gets $300 for their inserts, the Super Feet feel the same for me n their about $40 depending on where u purchase them.

Have em in all my shoes now.  Life is good!!!

    Bill,

If I am heading out to fish in mid to low 30 degree weather I start with Patagonia base layer bottoms n top.  Simms thin/calf length socks and Reddington heavy fleece under wader pants.  Heavy Simms wool socks with “Hothands” chemical foot length watmers.

Top will be a Patagonia mid-weight base layer and a long sleeve fleece 1/4 zip top with hood.  I have a heavy, wind stopper Simms long sleeve shirt.  Top this off with a rain jacket as this is a great wind break.

Hands-  start with black laytex gloves and top with Simms fingerless/flip over mits.  Put the “hot hands” chemical warmers in the Simms glove pockets.  Hands stay pretty workable.

Head- fleece balacave or Simms wind stopper beanie and ball hat.  If wind is up, both hoods come up.

The above is good for mid 30 degree temps. Colder than that and 8 just stay home.

    Bill,
The video was pretty good. The issue of light vs dark colors in clothing was especially interesting. Don’t know if his camera was a good representation of a trouts point of view but still put issues into perspective.

I believe that video shows one of the best ways to tie a Wolly Bugger. It is the one that uses wire to secure the hackle in place. Excellent durability on this fly.

    Bill,

When I am catching fish, once a certain number has been brought to hand, I like to experiment. Try the same fly in a different color. Try a different fly in the same color as they have been hitting on. Go up or down on hook size. It won’t take but a few casts to figure out that the fish are not all that picky or that they are not giving your changed fly any looks. You can always put the original fly on that was catching fish.
So now I have figured out that the fish are keying in on color, type of fly, size of fly or anything else I have tried. Just part of the education in fly fishing.

I have one of the old Zippo catalytic hand warmers. They work just fine but are heavy and they smell like lighter fluid. I think that you will need the little bag that they came with to keep the hot metal surface off your hands. They do get hot!

Do they still make them? Mine is pretty old. I use the chemical type hand warmers. When they are fresh, they work very well. Once they get old (new in the package) they don’t work as well.

    Bill,
You are correct in that any disturbance in your area and you lift the rod. That is the only way you can fish those tiny little dry flies.

    Bill,

I think the smallest hooks I have to tie flys on is maybe an 18 or 20. Even at that size, I struggle to tie it onto the tippet and can’t see em on the water.

Two years ago in Montana, the guide tied on a dual dry fly set-up. The trailer was an insanely small fly that I could not see. When the fish did come up for the fly, I missed the takes cause the “Ring” wasn’t anywhere near where I was looking. I may have been on the guides last nerve as he would call strike and I would just look at him like “What”?

Over at Bennet State Park, several fellow fishers have had excellent luck with a Holographic blue crackleback. Instead of wrapping the body with dubbing, they are just using holographic blue tinsel and then putting the peacock hurl over the back of the fly. Then just palmer your hackle over that. Fish it dry with some floatant or strip it under. Simple fly to tie and does get the fish.

One of the “Sage” pieces of advice I received about fishing was:
If your not catching fish, change flies, if ur catching fish, change flies!

So, two flies to an interested fish n two refusals. Change flies! The two previous flies were tied on #10 hooks. I changed to a Crackleback on a smaller #12 hook. Drifted that down the fishes feeding lane n BINGO, that nice big hen grabbed the fly n took off.
So a couple of things to think about if u have had refusals, different fly, smaller fly, and u could add smaller tippet too. As I was already using a 6x tippet, I just kept tippet size the same as I didn’t think that was spooking the fish.
Just some things to think about next time ur out.

Love tippet rings. Often I have a 3x leader and will run a 6x tippet. No issues on miss matched diameters.
Another advantage is if you hang up a fly the tippet will break at the ring and u only loose ur fly and not a whole leader.

    Bill,

I have a 8’9″ Sage Circa in a 3 wt. Fish it for bluegill on my pond. What a blast that is. The rod has a slower action but is deadly accurate and will surprise you on how far you can actually cast.

A decent bluegill is quite exciting on a 3 wt. I have actually fished it for some Trout that were approaching 2 lbs and that was probably the limit for the rod.

Agree, a 4 wt would be more of the ticket for Trout than a three. Getting a group together for a trip to Rockbridge in October. Break out that 5 wt of yours and join us. It will be a blast catching some bigger fish.

    Bill,

In speaking with Kenny, he indicated that in order for gear sales to be posted for the month, you put the notice on the last day of the month. So I put the gear for sale on July 31. Jim Craig was Johnie on the spot and picked up two really nice rods. He should be set for just about any situation now. Sort of hated to sell that Sage and Winston but two rods came into my collection so two had to go.

    Enjoy those rods Jim 🙂
