ParticipantI have three floatants I carry with me. A loon gel, Frog Fanny Dust, and a silicone paste. I use the gel most often, the dust for flies tied with CDC and the paste primarily for New Zealand Indicators. The paste is kind of thick and last for quite a while but is grease like so you need to clean your fingers everytime you adjust the indicator so I haven’t been using it as much as I used too.

ParticipantTim, Go to the Fly, Fish, Food website. Then go to the feathers and hackle department on the site and go to flash hackle. if you scroll thru the site they have pictures and descriptions of saddles that are graded by Whiting and sized by the owners of the shop. They have a good video on whiting and grading hackle. They did have a Grizzly midge saddle with feathers sized 16-20. the prices are ok I think though I haven’t bought any saddles. The bronze saddle the have may give you 500 or more flies but I would call and inquire about it before buying. It’s possible someone may be willing to split it with you. Looking at all of the saddles is like looking at fly tyers porn.

ParticipantHi Bob, Yes I noticed that there always seemed to be a good number of crayfish around. My last time out I watched as a fair sized crayfish fended of a curious trout. I found a video for a crayfish fly using a glass rattle, a small zip tie, and squirrel strips. I believe it was a Tightline video. For trout, I would keep them small to moderate but for bass, larger sizes would be better. I always liked the Jig and Pig when bass casting on the lakes.

ParticipantBob, thanks for the invitation but Rockbridge is a little out of my league right now. We need to get on a group trip soon.

ParticipantYes, Bob, I was there, as you know I am sorry we missed each other. I cast the new Ignighter in the 5 weight and I liked it better than the Method in the same weight I cast around the yard and picked out a spot closer in and it was fairly easy to hit the spot though not as easy as other less powerful rods. Certainly easier than with the Method. Unfortunately, I failed to ask the line and weight It was casting. Something I should know to do with any rod at such an event. For me, the Jewel was the Dart 3 weight using Rio’s new Creek line. Close in on small creeks and in the trout parks it would be a blast to fight even the stockers and small wild trout in Mill and Blue Spring Creek. I think I would opt for the four weight though. I also cast the Reddington Butterstick Fibreglass rod and it to was fun and would be at home on the smaller creeks and bluegill ponds where there might be a chance for some Bass to brighten the day.

ParticipantSorry I missed it but I bought some of the super hair from the sale we had during the fly tying class’ I haven’t figured out what I will use it for other than some Clousers. If you guys want and don’t mind me watching I could bring it over for you to use for your flies. I have a pretty good color selection.

ParticipantI’m glad Jim jumped in to help you out. Now I can borrow that 4 weight Winston and maybe a 7 weight Sage Method in a time of need. I saw your post on the FFForum and hoped Jim was the guy that got to them. Some good deals were made this last week.

ParticipantThanks, Guys. I received the e-mails about the sale and that the items were sold. I was just wondering why I didn’t see the items on the calendar as in the past. I’m happy for Bob being able to sell his rods so fast.

ParticipantYour welcome, I think everyone wants the 7 Method. I’m glad I could help. Is this the standard clearance. No returns?

ParticipantI tested a lot of the rods at Feathercraft, Sage, Orvis, Scott, Loomis, Douglas, and Hardy. All five weights. In the end, I picked the G Loomis NRX LP. It is a moderate action that can do what I want when I want it. It is an accurate rod pretty good for nymphing and small streamers (Woolly Buggers). It is best at dry flies though. If it hadn’t been the Loomis the Hardy Zepherus was the one.
I liked a lot of the rods but rods like the Sage X run close to a grand. The Orvis 3F is a good rod but still up there in price. The Scott Radian is a beautiful rod, not too pricey but found I had to concentrate on my casting all the time. If I was a better caster it might have been the one. The Hardy Zepherus is a beautiful well-made rod that is really easy to cast and could do it all. The Douglas Sky, another good rod at a good price and it reminded me of the Scott in that it needed guidance all the time. The Orvis 3F another easy casting rod that I could have like but it was brand new and I didn’t want to be the tester, the 3D wasn’t out yet a faster rod than the 3F.Bill

ParticipantI have been wondering if single hand Spey casting would be more useful to me as an angler. What line do you use? Rio has a Single Hand Spey line and I wonder if it would be necessary to perform a Spey cast.
