Thanks for the heads up, Kenny. I am getting an order together for Fire hole and was wondering about their stones. I don’t really know what colors I would get other than brown or black but I am sure I will think of a fly that needs that special tweak.

Thanks, Sensei and Bob. I will continue to experiment when the fishing is good and try to learn from my experiences.

When you float areas like the Eleven point you have to remember that you are in a wilderness area. I floated it when the Irish Wilderness was created. It borders the east side of the river. It is one of the prettiest rivers in Missouri. It is much as it was when White Europeans came to Missouri.

There is an old fisherman’s saying, “You don’t leave fish to find fish”, I guess that goes for changing flies as well. Stick with what is working. Personally, I would try different flies because I am stupid that way.

I should also mention that Daiichi and Orvis have big eye hooks in dry fly models. I just adapt were I can.
I have suggested to Firehole Outdoors that big eye hooks could be a big attractor to the older anglers.

Bob3700, these small flies are generally emergers meant to stay near the surface. I think when I am using flies as small as I have been tying I will need an indicator. A New Zealand style or a Griffith Gnat type fly. A size 16 Griffith Gnat should float a small emerger. Another hint I got from reading was to use your own judgment. If the trout disturbs the water around where you cast just lift the rod to set the hook if the trout took your fly, fish on.

Going smaller is why some of us are tying smaller flys. Like down to size 24, 26. I haven’t gone below size 22 and need to practice tying those on the tippet. When I can, I use big eye hooks.

I am familiar with Half Price Books. My wife and I have been a number of times. It is hard to walk out without at least a couple of books under your arm.

What about online videos (Youtube) are catching the eye of those that tie. Rob and Jane Klettke have a couple of series that I think offer some good info on flies and tying. Especially the use of rotational vices.

I tied a few of the flies on the FATC Flytyers site including the Yong’s Special. I am anxious to try them out.

That’s funny. I googled my name and nothing came up even though I was mentioned in the same FATC post. I guess you are just classier than I.
