ParticipantI fish 2 hook rigs. I generally fish bead head nymphs so I may not use a split shot at all. Some flies like an egg pattern that I don’t add a bead too I will put a weight above it and then a fly like a Zebra or Pheasant=tail above.

ParticipantOn the flies that reference the barb I just imagine where the barb would appear to be. I haven’t been tieing that long so I am sure my flies aren’t really in proportion to the extent that I would like them to be.

ParticipantGood for you Ripper, And it’s good advice to hold off on buying anything until after the class. Once you have a chance to see what’s available you will have a better idea of what you’ll want and need.

ParticipantOn the Ozarks Angler site, Al Agnew has posted a “guide” to fishing in Montana. He has a cabin out on a river and spends a good deal of time there. Check it out, it is worth the read. If you are not familiar with Al’s work he won the Missouri Trout stamp contest several times in the earlier years when the stamps where required. I don’t understand why they stopped the contest but I think we lost something when they did.

ParticipantWhile you’re checking out hooks look at the Firehole hooks I have used them and they are a very good hook and have some that are smaller than the 2499 TMC and the price is good. And you get 35 hooks in a pack.

ParticipantDia Riki 125s are 2x short but they too are a lighter wire hook. I use them for Midges and Barrs Emergers. They do have barbs so you have to smash barbs. You might check out Firehole Outdoors, Firesticks and see what they have, they are a new company making some pretty nice competition hooks. They are a little pricey though. Fly Fish Food also sells those and hooks from other makers.

ParticipantKenny will put out a list of materials you need for each fly we will tie at the lessons so you can just buy what you need. if you see something you want to tie then you need to make a list of materials. San Juan Worms are easy and you don’t need a lot of materials. Soft Hackles are a lot of fun to tie but require extra investment in bird skins. Starlings are not too expensive but they are fragile so take care while tieing. Kenny taught us a neat trick for tieing of the fly without crowding the eye. You will have fun and a lifelong hobby tieing your own flies.

ParticipantHow much money do you have and how happy is the marriage? All kidding aside You can spend as much or as little as you like on a vice and still get passable flies. I bought my vice from J. Stockard, It goes for about $35 bought I got it on sale for about $29. By the way, there should be a bunch of sales after the first of the year. Stockard’s, Cabelas and others and they will have some good prices on vices, hooks, tools, and supplies. Buy just what you need in materials. Flies like the PnP and similar Zebras can use the same hooks but different color thread, wire, and beads. You will use these a lot so you may stock up on those materials. Other flies wait until you know what you are going to tie before buying anything. Youtube has great tying videos. you can learn a lot from them.

ParticipantHi PurpleHaze,
You can purchase the Solarez three pack Thick, Thin, and Flex inexpensively. The Solarez brand is one of the first UV type adhesives. I bought my light for $9.00 from Wal-Mart online. I think its original use was for locating bugs like scorpions and bedbugs. This is a cheaper alternative than the other options. You can check sites like Sierra Trading post for name brand products from time to time and they may have lights and UV products.Bill

ParticipantSorry, I had attempted a link and it failed? You can find the video at OzarkAnglers.com look under Conservation.
Merry Christmas to all,

ParticipantI prefer to think I woke the fish up so my fellow fishermen had a better day. That was an act of unselfish sacrifice by yours truly.

ParticipantBright colors make you stand out from the trees and brush. Dressing in a banana suit certainly can’t help.

ParticipantI have AT&T and have coverage on the Current in and below the Park but not at Baptist Camp. None at Meramec Springs or on the river below the park. I’ve had Sprint and could barely use it at my home. Maybe you could get a cheaper pay-as-you-go phone for one area and keep your preferred provider.

ParticipantNow is the time to follow one of the teachings of the elders. Watch and learn what the fish will teach us. I found that fishing deeper holes, casting a little further and trying to keep movement to a minimum helps. One of the pictures on the trips page made me realize that the trout are having little trouble spotting us.
