ParticipantHi, Rick, I use furled leaders most of the time. I have a six-foot leader for dry flies on my 4 wt. Pulse. Four-foot leader on my 5 wt. that I have been using for nymphing. I have a longer one for dry flies and two streamer leaders with ball bearing swivels for streamers for the 6 wt rod. One for the floating line one for the sinking line. I think they work pretty much the same as a leader with a tippet ring but from my experience, a tippet ring on a tapered leader is more to cut down on the amount of tippet material you would use. On a furled leader it just helps turn over you fly better. On the nymph rig, I seem to have less fouling than with a standard leader. I really like them for drys and terrestrials. They are great for streamers.

ParticipantAll the flies you listed are good but where is the Mop fly? I am trying to organize my fly boxes so I can carry more productive flies and you list is a great help.

ParticipantIs there a difference between Mini vs Zonked rabbit squirrel strips. I ordered small strips 3/32″ wide, so less than a 1/8 inch wide and I have some zonked strips I used on some Squirrel Zonkers Streamers.

ParticipantSince attending the Kelly Gallop Streamer Tactics seminar at Feather-Craft I have been getting really interested in tieing the articulated streamers you see on Gallops and other sites. Only I doubt that I would tie the bigger versions. The Mini-Dungeon, Wooley Sculpin and the Nancy-P are some of Gallop’s patterns I am interested in. I started to tie a Barely Legal but I need bigger hooks and more Laser dub and Maraboo. Streamer fishing is another tool in your arsenal to use when chasing trout. You don’t need to have a special rod, just downsize some patterns and start chucking. By the way, Gallop refers to the Wooley Bugger as a wet fly.

ParticipantTen years old at the start, hardly a surprise to you Mother. You have had some interesting rods. I have some stickers but I am afraid to put them on our KIA. They might make it top heavy.

ParticipantStarling is the one I have been using to tie size eighteen soft hackles with. I have some Red Grouse feathers that are pretty small too but have to sort thru them to find ones small enough for the eighteen. I am on the look-out for a Quail or even better a Snipe.

ParticipantBy the way, someone else on a forum talked I expected you to own a fly shops inventory of rods. Anyone else cares to list their rods?

ParticipantI wound up with an Ott 30 led floor lamp with magnifier. really lights up the work area and leaves me the room on the table. I also picked up a go-go gadget headlamp magnifier for the fly tying class. If it had arms it would be perfect.

ParticipantI currently am using a 7 1/2 foot Three weight Cabelas Three Forks outfit I bought for fishing the small Blue Ribbon wild trout creeks we have in Missouri. Also works for Bluegill. a 4 weight 8 1/2 foot Sage Pulse, One of my favorites, an NRX LP by Loomis this is a sweet rod in 5 weight 9 foot this rod just feels good to cast.I will have a hard time deciding whether I fish the Sage or the Loomis this summer. Lastly, I have a Douglas DHF in a 6 weight 9 foot that I have used for streamers, large buggers, and nymphing.I bought this rod more as a rod for Smallmouth Bass and streamers for Trout but have just started really trying streamer fishing. Other than my two older rods (25 years old) and my even older Fiberglass rod that’s it. What’s in your rod tube.

ParticipantWe need a fly rod forum so we can discuss the merits of the different rods that people have. I always find it fascinating the way rods designed for the same purpose preform. Be sure to post reviews of your rods. What you like and don’t like.

ParticipantI tied up some of the Fr….s on a jig hook and I like the look and I have heard others praise them. I tied them with the guidance of an Orvis tutorial. One Has CDL tail, a natural pheasant body gold bead, and wire ribbing, shrimp pink UV2 Ice dubb, and 70 red thread. I also did some with orange 6/0 UNI, CDL tail, olive pheasant tail body with a caddis green UV2 collar, gold bead, and ribbing.

ParticipantSoft Hackle Carrot sounds like it should be on that list of words. Midcurrent has a new video of a stonefly tied euro style. It is very similar to the Little Black Stonefly in our fly tying education site. Midcurrent’s id tied on a jig hook with a tungsten bead. Really easy tye.

ParticipantI have a TFO Pro Special and have had other similar rods and the RIO Gold or another similar weight line is what you want. I think Cortland has a line that is true to weight and AirFlo Bandit would work as well. The Bandit However is 120 long and you either cut it down or get a larger reel if you want the backing capacity. Rio Gold Is a little heavier than the standard lines but is still true to weight line, the Rio Grand is a full line weight heavier and I don’t think you would like it on that rod. The best thing you could do is take your rod to either Feathercraft or Hargroves and try out different lines like the Gold Or Scientific Anglers Expert Distance. Throw in The SA MPX just to try a half line heavier line to see if you like it.
