Forum Home › Fly Tying › What is this?
I was asked by one of our grasshoppers to identify this tool that was found in an old fly tying kit. Can anyone tell me what this is used for?
I’ll give a clue later if no one knows (Jim, you’re out)
My brother from another mother, won’t tell me because of Sensei. It’s called Grasshopper loyalty!?
What is it, please? The cat dying over here.?
I think it is a Hackle Guard. It is used to hold Hackle back away from the hook eye while whip finishing.
You are CORRECT, Grasshopper! It is a hackle guard. Most kits don’t have them anymore because I think they are more of a pain in the butt to use. Remember to use a short coffee straw instead!!
Now you must take the pebble from my hand!
