Did you know ethos means “custom” or “character” in Greek? As originally used by Aristotle, it referred to a man’s character or personality, especially in its balance between passion and caution. Today ethos is used to refer to the practices or values that distinguish one person, organization, or society from others.
I was wondering, based on your experiences as a member of FATC, how would you describe the FATC ETHOS? In other words, what does FATC mean to you? How has it touched you or maybe even changed your life? What distinguishes FATC from a fishing club or a charitable organization?

I don’t have a philosophical answer for this. However, I do know that in this group if someone asks for something or help, others will jump to lend a hand.
Also, and more in line with the previous blog question, I can relate the following. The first couple trips I had to Montauk, as I was walking to the stream, something struck me. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, the scenery was great, and there were new friends who seemed genuine. What did I do to deserve this?

Ethos? A great word with meanings that go as far back as ancient Greece. As a 20 year USAF fighter pilot, I realize the importance of brotherhood for me. It’s not only being with “brothers” but being able to trust those “brothers” with your life. For me, whether it be during combat or practicing for combat, I had to trust in my brothers to have my back when racing around at 500mph at 100 feet off the ground or 20,000 feet in the air. That “trust” – that “brotherhood” is so important to get the mission done.
But it is also important for the heart of a man to know he belongs to a “brotherhood” of men that will be there for him – anytime, anywhere. That’s what I see in this fellowship – brotherhood ethos! Remember “It isn’t just about the fly fishing”
Thanks for the great question.

Ethos? A word I’ve heard many times yet never giving much thought to the meaning. Since retiring and not being corralled by the 40 hour work week I’ve learned that in order to really enjoy live there has to be more to it. While searching for that something I discovered volunteering for meals on wheels. It was great and was very fulfilling. But I wanted more. After being reacquainted with fly fishing and searching for ways to learn the sport I ran across a website called Fly Fishing at the Crossings. It was like killing two birds with one stone. This could be an avenue to learn the fly fishing game but more importantly provide the opportunity to be more involved in community service. Being a member of FATC is my road to building character, friendships, trust and enjoying life at a whole new level. Thank You to all my FATC brothers and especially to the foundation of a great organization.
